One of the most successful sit-coms of the eighties and nineties is back on our screens thanks to Channel 5 and it’s just what we need to help beat the lockdown blues.
In case you missed it first time around, The Golden Girls is a show about four sexy, sassy older women enjoying their golden years together in Miami.
The show’s four central characters; straight-talking Dorothy, a divorcee originally from New York, her wise cracking mother Sophia, the charmingly naïve and innocent Rose and man-mad southern belle Blanche were an unlikely yet perfect combination.!(upload://AdTW88V1RiHxDE2CSogh6oUbh5p.jpeg)
The show was a huge success when it first aired from 1985 to 1992 winning dozens of awards and making international stars of its four leading ladies.
The adventures of a group of older women might seem like an unlikely subject for a sit-com set in the midst of the youth-obsessed, go-go 80’s. In reality the show was a revolution in all sorts of ways. Not only did it focus on the lives of four older women, a group who up to that time had been mere bit-part players in most of TV’s output, pigeon-holed into the roles of wife, mother and grandmother. This show depicted these women as real human beings, not stereotypes, giving an honest and truthful portrayal of their lives exploring subjects like sex, love, loss, loneliness and the challenges of getting older.
The show also took an unabashed approach to all sorts of topics that were considered TV taboo at the time, from AIDS to single sex marriage.
The success of The Golden Girls was built upon its brilliantly funny and often touching storylines and the perfectly pitched performances of its leading ladies who shared an obvious and endearing on-screen chemistry.
But the show’s real heart came from its focus on the importance of friendship. Long before “Friends” ever floated the notion that a friendship could be the most important relationship in a person’s life, The Golden Girls were showing that friendship is something to be cherished and celebrated. A message that was firmly reinforced by the opening lines of its iconic theme tune “Thank you for being a friend.”
The Golden Girls is an absolute joy and a show that’s long over-due for a return to our screens so well done to Channel 5 for bringing it back especially now when we could all do with a laugh and the opportunity to spend some time with some old friends.
You can catch up with The Golden Girls weekdays at 12.15pm on Channel 5.
